It is December and I am Grateful (yes with a capital G!)

1. I'm grateful I remembered my blog password. I meant to keep my "News" updated on a monthly basis, but somehow the fall got a away from me.

2. I'm grateful Surrender is releasing December 6th! This is the final Haunting Emma book. I think part of why it's taken me so long to post is that I didn't know what to say about Surrender. The final book in a series is definitely bittersweet. I'm thrilled to have completed Emma Vaile's journey, but sad to say goodbye to her and Bennett, their friends, and the ghosts--I've loved every one of these characters and it's hard to let go. On the other hand readers are letting me know they love Emma's final tale and nothing makes me happier.

3. I'm grateful that Emma's journey may not be completely over. Nothing is finalized yet, but I think it's okay for me to say Deception is being optioned for television. Who do you think should play her and Bennett?

4. I'm grateful that Hand-Me-Down, my adult novel about a woman who falls in love with a man who's dated her older sisters has also been optioned for television. Again, contracts not signed, but it's happening!

5. Mostly, I'm grateful for people: Agents, editors, readers, book bloggers, and online writing friends. Writing a book would be very lonely without them. And I'm grateful I actually have a real life with other wonderful friends and family, both new and old.

I'm sure there are many things I'm forgetting to be thankful for, but this is a pretty nice start. Tell me, who or what are you grateful for this year?

What's happening? The UK versions of Deception and Betrayal will be out in September which makes me very excited.

Surrender, the final Haunting Emma book, comes out in the U.S. in December and as soon as I have a final cover, I'll be unveiling it over at Good Choice Reading.

We Heart Indies Day! Contest

Yes, it's possible this is a made up day, created by Lisa & Laura Roecker, but since I love independent booksellers and Lisa & Laura I'm playing along. To celebrate, I'm giving away books. Contest rules at the end. But first, why I love independent booksellers.

Sadly, my favorite independent bookstore, Books Etc. in Falmouth, Maine has now closed. What made Books Etc. so special is its booksellers. They were incredibly knowledgeable and well-read without being snobby. They'd recommend a deep literary novel, along with a current favorite romance or mystery. One Saturday, when I'd mentioned I was writing a YA novel, they handed me ARC of The Hunger Games and told me how much they'd all loved it. Yes, Borders and Barnes & Noble can stack piles of books to mark what they think will be a bestseller, but in my experience, it's the independent sellers that hand-sell smaller books until they hit the bestseller list. I really miss Books Etc. and it's incredible staff, who I could say to, "I need something good to read. What've you got?" and they'd hand me something unexpectedly great.

Now, I'm looking forward to moving back to Santa Barbara, where, sadly, Borders and Barnes & Noble have both recently closed. But there is a thriving independent, Chaucer's Bookstore, with books literally stacked to the ceiling, and I can't wait to get to know its booksellers.

My full iClue Contest

My iClue week is coming to an end. Here are both my full mysteries with three clues each. At the end is the link to the iClue site to enter your answers. Thanks for playing! And thanks again to Paperback Dolls, Good Choice Reading and The Reading Room for hosting me this week.

A little about my mysteries:

I love pop culture and love to include pop culture references in my books. But ... sometimes it can date a book or possibly end up tragically. For example, if today I wrote something specifically about Charlie Sheen, in two years it could read funny or not so funny, or just plain odd. So instead I'd mention an actor who got fired from a popular sitcom because he had some issues with drugs and prostitutes. That's vague enough that in two years it could be relevant to a completely different scandalous actor.

I also love music, but to me musical taste is so personal. I might love the song Raise Your Glass by Pink, but you might hate it and by extension think my character is lame for liking it. Still, music is such a huge part of teen lives that I can't leave it out. And that's what these mysteries are about.

Mystery #1

This is an excerpt from BETRAYAL, the second Haunting Emma book. She’s heading to the Knell for the first time with Bennett. Along the way she sees the ghost of a dead celebrity. Your job is to figure out what celebrity she sees.

From BETRAYAL:

Bennett led me down the cobble-stoned street, past narrow brownstones with ornate wrought-iron fences and ancient trees growing between the sidewalks.

“So, is this whole block ghostkeepers?” I said.

“Yeah, mostly people involved with the Knell.”

As dusk crept over the rooftops, I watched a boy who looked like Nicholas climb a streetlamp, light a long match, and fiddle with the glass. The lamp lit instantly—but from electricity, not his flame.

“I don't get it,” I said. “They’re not like the ghosts in Echo Point.” Or even the ones I remembered from my childhood, before my parents had my ability suppressed. “It's like they don't know they're dead.”

“Maybe it’s the street,” he said. “Or the Knell, or how many ghostkeepers live here. No one's really sure why, but they almost forget they're ghosts.”

We passed a small private park where a few old guys played chess at tables under the street lamps. A younger ghost moved a rook, eccentrically dressed and familiar.

I stopped and stared. “Is that...?”

“The actor?” A movie star who’d recently died of an overdose. “Yeah.”

“Have you asked if it was suicide or an accident?”

He looked at me. “No.”

“Oh, right.” He couldn't communicate with them and I felt like a jerk for bringing it up.

Mystery #2

This is a first-time-ever-seen excerpt from SURRENDER the third and final Haunting Emma book that will be published in December. In it Emma is listening to a song Bennett has downloaded to her iPhone. Read the passage and see if you can figure out who the artist is and what song she's singing.

From SURRENDER:

I didn’t go to school the next day. Simon never would’ve let me get away with that, but the Sterns either didn’t care or were stuck in the mire of their own depression. How would I know? I never even left my room.

Natalie and Lukas both knocked. I’d learned my lesson, though, and shoved my chair under the handle, so Natalie couldn’t barge in. I heard her trying to talk Lukas into smashing in, but he refused. Either he didn’t want to get in trouble with the Sterns, or he understood I just wanted to be alone. It was more of a guy reaction to a problem. I’d noticed girls often liked to cry and relive every moment of distress with a friend. I wasn’t that kind of girl.

Instead I listened to Bennett’s songs over and over. I kept my laptop in bed in with me, so I could look up the lyrics online and memorize them. One of the songs was about how life had no music ‘before you.’ That’s how I felt, like all the music and color had gone out of the world. Sometimes a song could really hit you, even if it was from an artist who usually sang about her lady parts.

BETRAYAL is officially out!

To celebrate, let's have a contest. This month, I'll be giving away one $25 iTunes gift certificate each week. Why an iTunes gift certificate? Maybe this excerpt from Betrayal will explain.

I ran my finger around the edge of the black box and didn’t feel any sense of ghostly resonance, so I opened the lid and found a nest of red tissue paper inside. Buried beneath the layers was an iPhone

That iz not jewelry, Celeste said, clearly unimpressed.

I grinned as I grabbed the phone and turned it on. Weird. Who’d send me a phone? I swiped to unlock it and found a little ‘1’ next to the mail application, which I touched with my finger.

A message had been sent to EmmaVaile at an account I didn’t recognize. It was from BennettStern at the same network.

Four words: ‘I’m grateful for you.’

I felt my face light up with joy. It’s from Bennett.

Iz still not jewelry, Celeste said, but she looked pleased for me. Then she faded away, leaving me alone with my gift, which I liked a thousand times better than any bracelet.

I tried to email him back, but the account no longer existed. I flipped through the other applications and found the phone loaded with aps and ring tones. Then I clicked the music. He’d loaded a hundred songs, all them about love. Some I recognized, some I didn’t.

I plugged in the white buds and settled into one of the playlists. As the beats began to throb, I was grateful too. Grateful, he hadn’t forgotten me.

The Liar Society

Today is dedicated to Lisa and Laura Roecker whose first YA novel, The Liar Society, will be published tomorrow!

Why I love Lisa and Laura
Mostly because they write one of the best author blogs out there. It's the only one I read every day. They offer the perfect blend of professional and personal, and are always funny, lovable and real. Not to mention fantastic writers. And they do a particularly fantastic and selfless job of celebrating YA books and writers. My only problem is that they only post once a day, I would seriously go back for more if they updated continuously. But I guess that's what twitter is for.

Why you should buy their book
Here was my official take:
"Who doesn't think their high school is conspiring against them? Toss in an unsolved murder, unstoppable heroine, ancient puzzles and a hot guy and you've got one killer novel."

My unofficial take:
I simply loved it! Kate is a fantastic, clever and cool character that's easy to relate to, Liam is the ultimate love interest, funny, smart and sexy. The mystery is unique and impossible to figure out and I loved the private school setting Lisa and Laura created. It felt like a fresh take on prep school and the details were unusual and sometimes a bit creepy. Don't miss this one. A contemporary YA novel that has the wild, mysterious ride of a paranormal.

And if you don't trust me, because admittedly I'm biased, I adore these authors. Here's what Kirkus said: "The authors create lively and memorable characters and keep the action moving in their lengthy whodunit; Kate’s interest in Latin adds an educational element. Clearly, the Roeckers had fun writing their story. Young mystery lovers may enjoy it just as much."

• Deception is now available in paperback from Scholastic. It's on the cover of their February Tab newsletter. If you haven't read it yet, they're offering it at the amazing price of $6. And, of course, it's still available from Bloomsbury in hardcover and soft, everywhere books are sold.

I’d read about THE DUFF everywhere and since the author, Kody Keplinger and I are represented by the same agency I begged my agent for a copy of the ARC (advance reader copy), which is the copy I’m giving away. Why you should try to win it:

Because the book is good. One of my favorite books this year. I completely identified with Bianca, loved Wesley and thought it read like real life. I fell for the romance, Bianca’s snarky sense of humor and the lust-worthy Wesley.

I asked Kody a few questions about the book and here are her lovely answers.

1. When I was seventeen I wrote bad poetry, it didn't even occur to me that I could write a book. In fact, I can remember thinking, How on earth do people do that? When did you realize you could actually complete a novel?

See, I was the opposite. It never occured to me that I COULDN'T write a novel. I tired many times when I was little, little bitty. LIke, my first "novel" attempt was at age nine after reading Judy Blume's DEANIE. I tried again, and finished what I thought was a novel when I was 11 - this one a Harry Potter rip off if there ever was one. I tried tons of other times with varying amounts of success, and then for a while just did fan fiction. But I never had that thought of "I can't." I always knew I wanted to, so I just . . . did it. I try to approach everything in life - going away for college, spending a summer in NYC, making new friends - that way. Never think "I can't." Always just know you want to and for that reason alone, it could happen.

2. How did you come up with the names Bianca and Wesley, which I love?

You know, no one has ever asked me this before.

With Wesley, I had been dying for a reason to use the name. Ever since I started watching Angel and met the character of Wesley on there, I fell in love with not only him but the name. There are so many good Wesleys. Princess Bride anyone? Anyway, I knew that it was my favorite name ever, and therefore this love interest should be named Wesley.

With Bianca . . . I have no idea. I always kind of liked hte name, but by no means was it a favorite. But when I started writing, I knew immediately that this girl was named Bianca. Most of my girl characters are that way - the names just sort of come with their characters.

3. I read recently on your blog that you were just starting to read romance novels for the first time, yet I think one of the elements in The Duff that works so well, is the romance. Where did you get your wonderful sense of romance?

Lots and lots of TV.

The OC, Gossip Girl - hell, even Friends. They all had/have great romances that kept me on my toes. I just took the aspects of those that I thought worked and put them in book form. It was so fun!

4. Do you feel like your career path is set, you will be a writer, or do you have other goals you hope to achieve?

I have a million and one things I want to try. I"ll always write, but I want to do other things, too. I want to work in publishign on both sides. I want to experiment with screenplays. I love the theater, too. I've got a load of interests and goals. I enjoy chasing them.

5. What's your next book?

Well, I can't give details yet, but I can say that it will be out in Fall 2011 and it was super fun to write!

Oops It's Been Almost a Month

Okay, so here's the news:

WriteOnCon. A bunch of really cool kid lit authors got together and decided to have an online writer's conference for all those people who couldn't make it to any of the other writer's conferences this year. They're offering an amazing list of events with tons of great publishing professionals and writers.

It starts tomorrow, August 10th, and best of all, it's FREE.

My lovely editor emailed me yesterday to tell me DECEPTION will be published in Turkey.

When I put Deception into a Turkish translator this is what came up: kandırma, aldatma, dalavere, hile, aldanma; ayartma; kanma; utanç

They probably won't title it any of those things. Though, at the moment, my personal favorite is Dalavere, which sounds sort of dashing.

Another Review

I wish they all could be like this one from Hope's Bookshelf. She even has the best summary I've seen so far, including anything I've written.

Summary: Emma's parents go on a mysterious business trip, and instead of being the rebellious teen she wants to be, she ends up having visions and fearing for her life.

Review: Nichols truly does have a wonderful novel on her hands. I devoured this book. Emma is a character that is very easy to read about, and Nichols has a wonderful style. My only complaint is the cliffhanger at the end! I need the next book pronto! Grade: A.

It's Been A While

I've been working hard on various projects, including revising BETRAYAL the second Haunting Emma book and starting to write POSSESSION, the third book in the series. But DECEPTION comes out June 8th and the reviews are starting to come in. And today I received my copies of the book in the mail, which is always a thrill.

Kirkus is notoriously mean, so I'm pretty happy with this.

I want to welcome the new followers! I'm not a great blogger, so I apologize in advance. Thanks for taking the leap of faith.

A friend asked if I was going to post another recipe today. I wasn't planning on it, but the weather here is Maine is gray and soggy and just the kind of afternoon I like to bake cookies with my son.

So here is what we're making:

Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

No harder than regular chocolate chip cookies and there's something satisfying about mashing bananas. Hope you all have a sweet day!

I don't love to cook, but I do love to eat and since I live in a small town in Maine where there is no delivery (I don't count Domino's) and very little take out, we cook a lot. So Wednesdays will now officially be Recipe Wednesday.

When I was home in Santa Barbara over the December holidays, Tortilla soup was on everyone's menu. At friend's houses and in restaurants. It's weird how foods suddenly become trendy. I'm a vegetarian and so is this recipe, but you could easily toss in cooked chicken at the end, along with sour cream, tortilla chips, avocado and cheese. This has become a favorite around here. And it's easy to make.

This is what I'm enjoying this week:

Finally got a chance to read the first in Claudia Gray's EVERNIGHT series. Though, I had a general idea about the plot, she handled it in unexpected ways. Really loved the major twist at the midpoint--caught me by surprise. Romantic and thrilling. Can see why so many readers loved it.

This short story by Claire Keegan in the New Yorker made me cry: Foster

And I'm reading TOYS GO OUT, by Emily Jenkins, to my five year old son. I've had trouble finding chapter books for this age group that are more charming than sarcastic. Adore Beverly Cleary's RAMONA series, because she manages to be both. But it's nice to see something contemporary (TOYS GO OUT was published in 2006) that isn't all seven and eight-year-olds calling each other "stupid head." Or a total snoreville, like the 143 MAGIC TREE HOUSE books. This is funny and sweet about the lives toys live.

Nostalgia

Just made a batch of split pea soup.

From the time I was five until I was probably ten, I ate so much Campbell's pea soup (plain and split pea with ham) that my family called me "Little Pea."

I haven't had a can of Campbell's for probably twenty years and now I only eat homemade about once a year. But every time I do, I think of how much it was favorite food and how now I think it's just okay. And how it doesn't seem right that my taste buds should have changed so profoundly.

I don't really know what pea soup has to do with J.D. Salinger, except that I'm nostalgic about him too. The first literary author I really fell in love with. At fifteen, I read everything he'd written and was disappointed that I couldn't get my hands on more. But like pea soup, when I went back to him as an adult, he didn't speak to me in the same way. I didn't fall in love again. My tastes had changed.

Still, he was brilliant. And Adam Gopnik wrote a wonderful obit for him in the New Yorker. J.D. Salinger

Balls

I keep my To Do lists, book ideas, research, and pretty much everything else in my stickies on my computer. While cleaning them out today, I discovered a quote from my then four year old son:

"Do you think the bouncy people who make bouncy balls, made this the bounciest ball ever?"

He came bouncing in the bedroom that morning, bouncing a ball meant to go 75 feet in the air. Later that day we bounced it over the house into the back field, and never saw it again. So yes, I do think the bouncy people who make bouncy balls, made that the bounciest ball ever.

A Year Later

Okay, so here I am exactly one year later. New editor is rightly asking me about a website, so must quickly update blog and pretend I have a web presence.

What's happened to me in a year:

Finished first YA novel. New editor is a marvel.

Adopted new dog and cat. Cat is half wild and almost never lets us pet her. Dog has just been hit by a car. He is currently cuddled next to me on chair, trying to recuperate. Old dog is terrified of massive Elizabethan collar on new dog. God knows where cat is, probably hunting some poor, defenseless baby bird.

Read approximately 667 picture books to four-year-old son. Running out of books at the library. Oddly, never have ideas for my own picture books.

Flirted with Hollywood. Co-wrote screenplay with husband and had wonderful producer trying to get my books optioned, but nothing has happened yet. Fingers and toes are permanently crossed that something will. Though, probably have jinxed myself by posting this.

Walked dogs approximately 492 times.

Ate too much tiramisu from Whole Foods. Regret ever trying it in the first place.

Longed for better weather in Maine approximately 348 days.

Some things I can't figure out:

What am I supposed to blog about?
Why can't I type more than one word in the title?
Who's going to read this?
Do I still need a website?
How will I attract millions of viewers who will click on the links to buy my books?

I'm sure it will all get sorted out. Or ... I'll never come back here again. One or the other.
